My American dream came true

As the first generation immigrant from China, I was asked to speak at various events because people are fascinated by my story.  Twenty one years ago when I came to this country, I had only $40 in my pocket.  Against the odds of being laid off from a very large company in 2008, I came a long way from an engineer to be a business owner today.  And the best of all, I realized my dream of doing something I truly like.

I would summarize my American journey in two milestones.  The first milestone was ten years into living in the United States, I had a very nice job with Eastman Kodak Company, a nice family with two boys, and a big house with no mortgage and no debt.  The second milestone was twenty years into living in the United States, I lost my job but found my own company, our family grew with another addition: a baby boy, and financially we were doing very well.

I contribute my success to my strong personality.  If somebody gave me a lemon, I would say: watch me, how I turn it into lemonade.  It was this kind of attitude that kept my head hold high in difficult circumstances.  With hard work and some talents, I was able to acquire wealth through good jobs and investment.  And I am a saver.  Ever since I started working, I have always maxed out my 401K contribution.  Over the years, it grew to be a nice big egg.  So when the job was not there, I am able to create my own job and weather off years of no income.

But my success did not come easy.  Ever since I was 10 years old, I went to the most famous boarding school in Shanghai.  It was from 6am to 9pm daily 6 days a week this kind of study in school and hard-working prepared me for my long journey to achieve my American dream.  I am grateful that my parents insisted to send me to the best schools in China despite the fact we were very poor at that time and they had to borrow money to do so.  Thirty years ago, my mother as an elementary school teacher was making $10 a month in salary.  My parents were not “Tiger Mother” (this is a very controversial topic today both in China and in USA).  I simply knew what was expected of me and I wanted so much to live a better life, so I automatically did everything they expected of me and I made them very proud of me by bringing them many “faces” (Chinese are big on saving faces).  All of my brother and sisters went to colleagues and received very good education.  Today all of us siblings are either USA citizen or Canada citizen and we are doing well.  I can certainly relate to the documentary “Last Train Home” (归途列车) about Chinese parents’ unappreciated sacrifices in their children’s eyes.  When I was young I may not have realized that but as I grew older and had my own children, I really appreciated how much my parents have sacrificed for me.  My Chinese family certainly contributed to my success too.

Why Las Vegas is a big attraction?

As the airplane left Las Vegas, I was overlooking the city in the middle of nowhere and could not help thinking why Las Vegas is such a big attraction to Chinese, Japanese, Indian, European and even American. Gamble, shopping, show and food are the top reasons why.
The human desire to win money and the addiction to keep winning more make this gamble city truly a sinful city. I heard people told me that Chinese officials visiting Las Vegas their tour packages include thousands of dollars of gambling money. The government pays for it, so why not? For me, every time I go to a casino, I set a limit for myself normally is less than $20. If I lose it, then I quit. If I win any money, I quit also. I am not a lucky person so I know better.
Adult show, theatre show, talent show, comedy show, celebrity show and concert are really fun to see in Las Vegas. No wonder if you have been to Las Vegas and you haven’t seen any of them, you miss a lot of the fun. Make sure you check out lasvegasshows.com before you go.
Food used to be my favorite thing. It was cheap. However it has changed over the years. This time, I stayed at Planet Hollywood. It claimed to have Las Vegas’ #1 buffet and the dinner costs $28.99. Who can eat that much of food? It is overrated and expensive. I do like the hotel though. It was a nice remake of Aladdin. My room was a suite themed with Tom Cruise’s movie “The Firm”. It has several pictures from the movie and even displays a jacket that Tom wore in the movie. Movie fans and Hollywood dreamers, even though it is not the real Hollywood in LA, you can definitely feel the atmosphere of Hollywood excitement.
The Miracle Mile Shops is the shopping complex connecting to Planet Hollywood. Here you can find high-end shops with name brand merchants. Why go all over the world to find what you want, you can shop everything at Miracle Mile Shops. I know Japanese and Chinese have deep pockets and they love name brands. Their society is so emphasizing on “face”, it is a status symbol to own name brand.
My client told me that Las Vegas used to be $100 vacation destination for Americans, but I told him that it is no long true. For a 3-night vacation to Las Vegas from Minneapolis, the best package will cost about $300 per person. Good luck to you and have fun in Las Vegas!

Enchant your boss

From the book “Enchantment: the art of changing hearts, minds, and actions”, I learned making your boss look good is your day-to-day job.  Among all the tips the author share, I think these are the most important ones to remember without compromise your ethics and morality:

Drop everything and do what your boss asks.  This means you treat your boss’ matters with urgency.  It’s an attitude that shows how much you care.

Under-promise but over-deliver.  So before you promise anything, think twice.  You want to delight your boss unexpectedly.  Who does not like unexpected happy result?

Ask for mentoring.  If your boss becomes your mentor then you have the opportunity to build a relationship through this.  If not, then at least you express your desire to have him/her as your mentor, you boss will be happy to hear that.  Which boss does not like to think they are good at nurturing their employees?

Deliver bad news early.  By doing so, your boss would make aware of the situation early and may want to take action early.  But before you tell your boss about the bad news, you should think about what you can do to help solve the problem.  This will show your boss you are always on top of things even in undesirable situation.  How cool it is!

I did not know these tips when I was working for Corporate America.  I was too naïve to think that we do things according to our capabilities. Only in China professional people need to live a very delicate life to balance working relationships with everyone including their bosses.  But I am wrong; everywhere in the world you should make your boss happy.  Today I am my own boss so I know how delight I will be if my employee shares my burden. If you care for connect with me, just send me an invitation or be-friend with me.  I am on professional network LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/katieqiongdailey2008 and on QQ: 1687958164@qq.com also other Chinese social media
