From the book “Enchantment: the art of changing hearts, minds, and actions”, I learned making your boss look good is your day-to-day job. Among all the tips the author share, I think these are the most important ones to remember without compromise your ethics and morality:
Drop everything and do what your boss asks. This means you treat your boss’ matters with urgency. It’s an attitude that shows how much you care.
Under-promise but over-deliver. So before you promise anything, think twice. You want to delight your boss unexpectedly. Who does not like unexpected happy result?
Ask for mentoring. If your boss becomes your mentor then you have the opportunity to build a relationship through this. If not, then at least you express your desire to have him/her as your mentor, you boss will be happy to hear that. Which boss does not like to think they are good at nurturing their employees?
Deliver bad news early. By doing so, your boss would make aware of the situation early and may want to take action early. But before you tell your boss about the bad news, you should think about what you can do to help solve the problem. This will show your boss you are always on top of things even in undesirable situation. How cool it is!
I did not know these tips when I was working for Corporate America. I was too naïve to think that we do things according to our capabilities. Only in China professional people need to live a very delicate life to balance working relationships with everyone including their bosses. But I am wrong; everywhere in the world you should make your boss happy. Today I am my own boss so I know how delight I will be if my employee shares my burden.
